Aquatic plants, both native and invasive, have a fraught relationship with boaters, paddlers, fishers, swimmers, and shoreline communities. Oft-maligned and neglected, even amongst botanists, aquatic plants quietly provide vital services to aquatic ecosystems, including habitat for fish, waterfowl, amphibians, and invertebrates. Aquatic plants also play key roles in protecting shorelines from erosion, improving water clarity and quality, and nutrient cycling. Dare to dip your toes into the wet and wild world of Alberta’s aquatic plants with botanist Kallum McDonald. This webinar will explore the basic biology and ecology of aquatic plants, including how to identify the 10 most common aquatic plant species found in Alberta’s lakes and rivers.
