May 24, 2025 – ANPC Annual Workshop: Plants Through Time

The 2025 Workshop is happening on May 24th in Red Deer, Alberta! Some of this year’s workshop “Plants through Time” will highlight how plants, habitats, conservation and people’s knowledge have evolved through time, from decades to thousands of years. Our Keynote Speaker will be Jenny L. McCune with the University of Lethbridge (http://jlmccune.weebly.com/) speaking on Plants through Time: From the Distant Past to the Invisible Present. She will be discussing her experiences studying plant communities, highlighting the challenges and intrigue involved in understanding the short-term and long-term history of plants, and discuss these challenges to plant conservation in Canada. Below is the preliminary list of speakers, a full schedule will be released soon. There will be a banquet dinner after the workshop and a short field trip the morning of May 25 to Morris Flewwelling Ranch, located in the Pine Lake Moraine approximately 30 minutes drive southeast of Red Deer.

Door prizes have been donated by Ecologic Horticulture Ltd (Prairie Pollinator blend, Smooth Blue Aster, Blanket Flower, Wild Bergamot and Purple Prairie Clover native seed packets) and Julie Figures (Little Books on Bees: Bumble Bees, Solitary Bees and Gardening for Bees), there are also Alberta Plant and Pollinator Community Hub’s Plants of Alberta pack of cards 2nd edition with Blackfoot names, traditional uses and plant identification, ANPC Wildflower stickers and a new ANPC T-shirt.

Vendors: Alberta Plant Watch book sale, Grasslands Restoration Forum, Red Deer River Naturalists and ANPC.

Field Trip

The 2025 ANPC Workshop Fieldtrip will be held the day after the workshop, on Sunday, May 25, between 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Location: Morris Flewwelling Ranch, in the Pine Lake Moraine, about 30 min. southeast of Red Deer.

Hosts: Walk will be hosted by Morris Flewwelling, Maureen Carey, and Eileen Ford.

Difficulty: Easy, walking along horse/animal trails and cutlines, minimal elevation gain,.

Amenities: Free parking (on property or along gravel road along property), outdoor outhouse, and a shelter.

Notes: Wear appropriate clothing and good footwear / boots, bring snacks, water, sunscreen, bug spray, etc..

In recognition of Albertan’s concerns about the cost of living and ensure we can see as many of your lovely faces as possible, tickets to the 2025 Annual Workshop will be available at the reduced ‘early bird’ rate until registration closed at noon on Friday May 23, but you are welcome to email treasurer@anpc.ab.ca
