June 13-15, 2025: Botany Alberta in the Beaver Hills Biosphere

Join us for Botany Alberta from Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre in the Beaver Hills Biosphere, just east of Edmonton!

Weekend Guided Hikes: 

  • Friday, June 13th afternoon: Smith-Blackburn Homestead (Edmonton and Area Land Trust conservation area). 
  • Saturday, June 14th morning: Beaver Hills Biodiversity Trail.
  • Saturday, June 14th afternoon: Strathcona Wilderness Centre trails. 
  • Sunday, June 15th morning: Hicks Conservation Land (Nature Conservancy of Canada and Edmonton and Area Land Trust conservation area). 
  • Sunday, June 15th afternoon: Campbell and Ball Berg Conservation Lands (Nature Conservancy of Canada conservation area).

These field trips will showcase the region’s rolling terrain, which supports a mosaic of ecosystems, including lakes, wetlands (marshes, swamps, fens, bogs), and forests (deciduous and mixedwood). By participating, you will be documenting and updating plant species lists for the Beaver Hills Biosphere, supporting conservation and research efforts.

Saturday Evening Presentation and Dinner: 

Join us at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre Lodge for a catered dinner, followed by an engaging evening presentation by local ecologist Dr. Kevin Timoney. Dinner is optional and for a fee.

Accommodations:

  • We’ve reserved the Strathcona Wilderness Centre Lodge for the weekend! Cozy accommodations are available for up to 40 guests. Donations towards the cost of lodging will also be gratefully received. Beds will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so reserve your spot early!
  • There are also a few campsites at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, which can be reserved by phone, email, or online [780-922-3939; swcinfo@strathcona.ca].
  • Alternate accommodations are available in Sherwood Park (20 mins west on Baseline Road) and Edmonton (35 mins west on Highway 16).
