Plant Study Groups
Central Alberta Plant Study Group (Edmonton)
The ANPC Central Alberta Plant Study Group (CA PSG) meeting season runs from October until April, where regular meetings are held the last Wednesday of the month, starting at 6:30 PM MT. The meetings are in-person and are hosted by various speakers on various topics related to plants, with a focus on Alberta and native plants. All are welcome – novice to advanced botanists! The meetings take place in Edmonton at the University of Alberta main campus (Botany Wing, Biological Science Centre, ALTA Herbarium).

“Native Plants”

Manna will be joining us to talk about native plants.

Location: 5th and 6th floors, Biological Sciences Building (east end), Botany Wing, Saskatchewan Drive, University of Alberta, Edmonton
Parking/Transit Options: Meter parking along Saskatchewan Drive, bike racks on campus, parking lots on campus and in area, LRT/Bus station on campus
Access: For security reasons, some of the building doors may be locked after 6:00 PM MT. Please look for signs directing you to the nearest unlocked door. If you have any issues entering the building please email CentralPSG@anpc.ab.ca.

Peace River Plant Study Group
Regularly scheduled meetings continue year round, with indoor meetings during the winter months, and outdoor plant walks in the summer months.
Location: NAIT Centre for Boreal Research, 8102 – 99 Avenue, Peace River, AB (beside Northern Lakes College). Parking is free in front of the building.
Date: The first Thursday of the month
Time: 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM MT
Recommended Items to bring: Notebook, favourite reference book if you have one (not required) plus your inner plant plant nerd. Your own snacks or beverage if desired.

Southern Alberta Plant Study Group (Calgary)
Calgary Plant Study Group (Calgary PSG) meets from October to March on the first or second Saturday of the month starting at 1 PM. Please join us at the University of Calgary Herbarium for informative presentations, plant study opportunities and open discussions on a range of topics regarding native plants and ecosystems. Hosted by: Brenna Pavan, Terrestrial Invasive Species Technician, Alberta Invasive Species Council

“The Ecological Restoration of Grasslands”
Hosted by: Mathis Natvik, Landscape Architect and Sessional Instructor, University of Calgary
Mathis will detail the methodology for converting a cover of invasive smooth brome to native grasses and forbs. A timely topic for spring!. Find out more about Mathis here.

Parking: Map to Herbarium
C-Train: Disembark at the University LRT (C-Train) station.
Access (wheelchair accessible): Please enter by the lower level door on the south side of the building (see attached map) where an ANPC volunteer will be waiting to let you in (or call the Herbarium on 403-220-5262). Follow the signs to the Herbarium.
Food and drink are not allowed in the Herbarium
